Huntington Beach had high surf, rough currents and poor visibility on that summer day, the claim says. The police lookung report says one of the men rescued told officers none of the four men had substantial swimming experience. City officials said both claims are under investigation and no action has yet been taken by the city.
A previous Orange County Register article said the men were part of a large group from the Inland Empire visiting the beach. Witnesses reported that four swimmers went into the water and were struggling in the high surf.
Lifeguards in the tower on the pier, Tower 0, saw three swimmers who needed help in the water, according to the incident report. Two lifeguards responded in the water to rescue the men. One swimmer made it to shore and lifeguards rescued the second, the report says. A third person went under water.
A witness said there was a fourth person in the water but lifeguards did not see him, according to the incident report. Thirty-six safety personnel, including beacb, divers and lifeguards in boats, looked for the two swimmers who went under until about 7 p.
A helicopter search was also launched and police responded to the scene, the incident report says.
Some readers responded to the initial story of the drowning saying they watched onshore as lifeguards lined up in the water, treaded for hours and kept diving below the surface. One reader commented: More than 10 million people visited Huntington City Beach that year.
